Ireland is the first EU country to enter a second blockade

Ireland is the first EU country to revert to crown lockdown. Prime Minister Michael Martin on Monday ordered another curfew for the population. Schools were an exception, they should remain open. The government decided to close all unnecessary shops, restaurants and bars that are only allowed to offer services outside the home. The measures take effect starting Wednesday at midnight for the next six weeks.

“Everyone in the country is asked to stay home,” Martin said in a nationally televised address. Consequently, people can only move within five kilometers of their place of residence. However, schools and day care centers must remain open “because we cannot and do not want the future of our children and adolescents to become another victim of this disease,” Martin said.

Like many in Europe, the country recently experienced a renewed increase in the number of cases. On Monday, authorities reported more than 1,000 new infections. According to official figures, people have died in Ireland as a result of the crown since the pandemic began in 1852. (AFP)
