reThe race was only seconds long, then it was over again. The cars returned to the pit lane at the Bahrain Formula 1 Grand Prix.
A serious accident by Romain Grosjean had caused the interruption. After touching Daniil Kwjat, the Frenchman landed on a railing after the second corner. His car broke in two and caught fire.
Shocking images that initially raised the fear of bad things. “I saw the flames and I was hoping Roman was lucky. It scared me, ”said Haas team leader Günther Steiner.
It was a miracle that Grosjean emerged nearly unscathed from the sea of flames after 27 seconds. Still wearing a shoe and helmet, he limped down the runway. The Haas pilot was airlifted to the hospital for further investigation.
“Obviously he’s agitated, he has minor, minor burns, but he’s probably fine and getting checked right now,” Steiner says. “I would like to thank the medical team for being there so quickly. That was terrifying. We were lucky. “
Vettel falls behind in the beginning
As the crash site and the broken railing had to be inspected and repaired, the continuation of the race was postponed indefinitely.
Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton successfully defended his pole position at the start against his teammate Valtteri Bottas. Sebastian Vettel lost four places and fell back to 15th place.
