US President Donald Trump took it, as did Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro. Now it has been proven: The active ingredient in malaria hydroxychloroquine, for which the two politicians campaigned in the fight against Covid 19 disease, has at least temporarily found a large following in Germany. This is the result of a preliminary evaluation by the AOK Scientific Institute for SPIEGEL.

In February this year it was estimated that 704,000 daily doses of hydroxychloroquine were administered, in March it was almost 1.06 million. This means that the drug was prescribed to almost 10,000 more patients than in the previous month, according to the AOK analysis. The assessment includes prescriptions from resident physicians at the expense of compulsory health insurance, which was carried out by extrapolating the AOK data. In April and May, the figures fell again, but remained at a higher level than the previous year. In June, the values were then below the average of the previous year.

Hydroxychloroquine is an approved drug for the treatment of various rheumatoid-type diseases and for the prophylaxis and treatment of malaria. Its effectiveness against Covid-19 was controversially discussed in the medical world in the spring of 2020, but was propagated by Donald Trump and Jair Bolsonaro. While in the US under political pressure in late March there was an “Emergency Use Authorization” – an emergency approval – by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of Covid-19, the drug was used in Europe for the indication Covid-19 never admitted.
