August 29 was the most important day since 1945, according to the right-wing journalist Jürgen Elsässer’s “Compact” magazine just hours ago. The magazine, which is known for right-wing conspiracy myths, had been playing for days for the anti-crown political rally in Berlin. Now, the director of the “Compact Magazine” is likely to have to deal with another problem in Saturday’s demo: Facebook has removed the magazine’s Facebook and Instagram accounts without warning.
Since March, the magazine “Compact” has also been classified as an alleged suspicious case by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution and, therefore, classified as allegedly right-wing extremist. It is a remarkable step and should be an important turning point for the “Compact-Magazin”. More than 90,000 people rated the Facebook page, through which “Compact” also sold products, with a Like. The magazine was also frequently linked to on right-wing Facebook groups. For right-wing circles, even within the AfD, where the magazine and its digital affiliates are among the most read publications, Facebook is highly relevant.
Facebook is under pressure
In the evening, shortly after 8pm, the magazine’s accounts were surprisingly disconnected and instead of the first images of the anti-corona demonstrations that had been placed there before, only symbolic images: the page was no longer available or it had been eliminated, he said. A Facebook spokeswoman confirmed WDR and Ed the step: “We prohibit organizations and individuals from using our services if they systematically attack people based on characteristics such as origin, gender and nationality. Therefore, we have removed the compact magazine from Facebook and Instagram.”
Facebook relies on its own set of rules, the so-called community standards. Remove the pages of organizations when they violate hate standards. Facebook has been under massive pressure for months. Numerous companies around the world had announced that they would stop advertising if Facebook did not act more consistently against hate on the Internet. The Facebook spokeswoman emphasized WDR and Edthat the current step has nothing to do with public pressure, it is a very long internal review process.
“Compact” does not respond to the request
The latest post on Instagram showed Martin Sellner, head of the far-right Identity Movement, at the start of the anti-crown rally in Berlin, without naming his name. Even “the one whose name should not be mentioned” is already there, jokes “Compact” magazine. Facebook emphasizes that it had disconnected pages even before the public pressure was launched: the identity movement account had already been deleted in 2018, that of “One Percent” in 2019. The magazine “Compact” was initially not open to comment on the Friday night. reach.
