The president of the Robert Koch Institute, Lothar Wieler, expects many more deaths in Germany from the corona virus. Currently, the number of serious episodes and deaths increases from week to week.
The crown situation in Germany remains very tense, as RKI chief Lothar Wieler emphasized on Thursday. He warned of “many more deaths” and that it is increasingly rare to protect the elderly and nursing homes.

The situation of the crown in this country remains very tense, he emphasized. In recent weeks, light blocking measures have managed to stabilize the number of cases, an initial success, as Wieler emphasized. “Without the measures, the numbers would be much worse.”
However, too many people would still be infected with Sars-CoV-2. “The figures are still too high. They don’t sink noticeably, ”Wieler emphasized. “Too many people are still infected.” This is not due to increased testing, as the positive rate of testing is constantly increasing.
“We are also seeing the number of serious courses and deaths increasing from week to week. And we have to have many more ”. This is a development that was feared given the persistently high number of cases. Wieler also emphasized that 30 million people in Germany belong to the risk group, because they are over 60 years old or have previous illnesses.
The number of new infections must be significantly reduced. “We can only do this together!” Wieler emphasized. Many infections could still be prevented with the AHA + L rules: distance, hygiene, respirator use, ventilation. “They also apply at home if the neighbor comes.” The virus knows no borders or time. Wieler is aware that this is “exhausting and frustrating”, but it is necessary, “especially for Grandma and Grandpa.” These measures are necessary until people are vaccinated.
Lateral thinkers also risk the health of their peers
Those who deny the disease are not only putting their own health at risk, but also that of their fellow men, Wieler addressed the “lateral thinkers.”
It is not necessary to constantly develop new ideas to keep the pandemic under control, but measures must be implemented consistently. “The focus is on people’s behavior.”
Meetings should continue to be avoided, even events where rapid tests are used, for example. These are always just a snapshot and are not always 100% reliable.
Outbreaks in nursing homes and nursing homes are steadily increasing
At the same time, it is becoming more and more difficult to protect the elderly and nursing homes, outbreaks in the corresponding facilities are constantly increasing, which is of great concern to the RKI, as the mortality rate is higher in the older age group. “Everything is very dangerous,” Wieler said. “Nearly one in five infected people in nursing homes and nursing homes dies.”
The incidence at the national level is currently 134.1 and has hardly decreased in recent weeks. In the city-states of Berlin, Hamburg and Bremen there is a slightly downward trend, but the number of cases in eastern Germany is increasing significantly, especially in Thuringia and Saxony. According to RKI figures, nearly 4,000 people are currently being treated in intensive care units in Germany for a Covid 19 disease.
In order to stop the spread of the virus, the federal and state governments decided to extend the partial blockade that has been in effect since the beginning of November with the closure of numerous facilities until January 10, 2021.
