The number of new coronavirus infections in Germany has risen to 11,287. The Robert Koch Institute announced this in the morning. The previous record was 7,830 infections.

The number of new corona infections detected in one day in Germany has increased dramatically again, exceeding 10,000 for the first time. According to the Robert Koch Institute, health authorities reported 11,287 cases within 24 hours in the morning. The previous high since the start of the corona pandemic in Germany was reached on Saturday with 7,830 new infections.

On Thursday of last week, 6,638 cases were reported for the first time more than in the spring. However, the current values are only partially comparable to those of the spring, because now many more tests are being done and therefore more infections are discovered. According to experts, recently reported infections are an indication of how strong the virus was in society about a week ago due to the time between infection, test, result, and report. So it will take some time before the policy measures are reflected in the registration figures.

RKI holds a press conference today

In view of the increasing number of cases, the Robert Koch Institute wants to provide information on the development of the pandemic in Germany at an online press conference on Thursday. RKI President Lothar Wieler recently emphasized the seriousness of the current situation. “Currently an accelerated increase in the number of transmissions can be observed in Germany,” writes the RKI in its management report. “Therefore, an urgent call is made for the entire population to commit to protection against infections.” Among other things, the RKI includes rules of distance and outdoor hygiene, ventilation of indoor spaces and, where necessary, covering the mouth and nose.

Since the beginning of September, the number of corona tests per week has fluctuated between 1.1 and 1.2 million, with a very slight upward trend. However, the positive rate has increased from 0.75 to 3.63 percent over time. The backlog of samples has increased again for two weeks. Some laboratories reported problems with the delivery of work materials.

Threshold 50 falls more and more frequently

More recently, almost a third of all RKI-registered districts and cities were above the threshold of 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants per week, after which more stringent protection measures are applied in many places. In around 30 districts and cities, the value was even higher than 100.

According to the RKI, at least 392,049 people in Germany have been shown to have been infected with the virus since the beginning of the Corona crisis. The number of deaths related to a corona infection was therefore 9905. That was 30 more than the day before. According to RKI estimates, around 306,100 are now recovered.
