More than 40 million corona infections worldwide

The historian sees Corona as an “epochal turning point”
05.42 am: Historian Andreas Wirsching sees the end of an era in the coronavirus pandemic. “There are many indications that 2020 will go down in history as a momentous turning point,” said the director of the Institute for Contemporary History of the German Press Agency.
“We don’t know exactly yet, but you can see a few things, especially with regard to globalization.” Wirsching believes that the era of internationalization and globalization, which has existed since around 1970, will be subject to major changes, “if it doesn’t end.”
8,000 soldiers are said to help with corona tests in Slovakia
05.25 am: Slovakia wants to use 8,000 soldiers and 50,000 state employees for the planned mass corona tests in the town. The Bratislava government decided on Sunday. According to the TASR news agency, Defense Minister Jaroslav Nad said that after an extraordinary cabinet meeting all available soldiers, policemen and firefighters would be used for the project.
It was not yet clear whether the tests would be voluntary or mandatory. Prime Minister Igor Matovic said the issue was hotly debated. For mass testing to be successful, as many people as possible should participate, Matovic said. Otherwise, it threatens a national shutdown.
4,325 new corona cases in Germany
05.14 am: According to the Robert Koch Institute, German health authorities reported 4,325 new corona infections in 24 hours on Monday morning. The value is comparatively low, also because not all health authorities transmit data on weekends. Based on the 2,467 infections reported on Monday of last week, the current value is significantly higher. The number of new infections reached 7,830 for the third time in a row on Saturday.
The high number of infections in recent days cannot be directly compared to previous record values in spring. Meanwhile, many more tests are being done every day, so more infections are also being detected.
According to the RKI, at least 366,299 people in Germany have been shown to have been infected with the Sars-CoV-2 virus since the beginning of the Corona crisis (as of October 19 at 12:00 am). Therefore, the number of deaths related to a corona infection was 9789. That was twelve more than the day before. According to RKI estimates, around 294,800 have been recovered.
Polish Gym founds a church due to crown restrictions
04.39 am: To circumvent the crown’s restrictions, a Polish gymnasium has called itself a church. “Because fitness classes are not allowed, we started today offering religious gatherings for members of the Healthy Body Church,” the Atlantic Sports study said on Facebook over the weekend. The creative action aims to counter a measure with which the Polish government closed swimming pools and gyms in the face of the increasing number of corona infections.
“Hard to believe? Everything is possible in this world,” said the Facebook page of the gym in Krakow on Saturday. Atlantic Sports also announced the opening of a store for training equipment and invited customers to try the products for free at the venue.
Restaurants across the country are being forced to close earlier due to measures to contain the coronavirus. In high-risk areas like Warsaw, weddings are banned and high schools teach online. Church services are still permitted in the Catholic country of 38 million people, as long as believers wear masks and adhere to a number of participants.
Telephone sick leave is possible again from Monday
4.30 am: Due to the aggravated corona situation, patients with cold symptoms can now apply for a nationwide sick leave again. The special regulation came into effect on Monday and will initially apply until the end of the year, as decided by the Federal Joint Committee on Health Care. Patients with mild respiratory illnesses don’t have to go to a consultation just because they need sick leave. This should help avoid crowded waiting rooms and the risk of infection.
The corresponding sick leave is available for seven days. To do this, doctors must ask patients about their condition in person over the phone. A one-time extension of sick leave can be issued over the phone for another seven calendar days.
Caregiver warns of “isolation at all costs”
01.01 am: The federal government’s authorized care representative, Andreas Westerfellhaus, cautions against the need to re-isolate people in need of care in light of the sharp increase in the number of corona infections. “Isolation is not allowed at all costs,” Westerfellhaus tells the “Funke Mediengruppe” newspapers.
Many of those affected found isolation in the early months of the pandemic “incredibly stressful.” Therefore, he supports regulations that ensure nursing home residents can celebrate Christmas with their families, Westerfellhaus says. A concept is currently being worked on at the national level to support home and outpatient services with rapid tests, among other things.
Italy tightened crown restrictions
12:45 am: Italy is tightening measures in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic. Mayors were given permission to cordon off public spaces and streets starting at 9 p.m. to avoid mass gatherings, Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said at a news conference Sunday night. Gambling halls and betting offices must close at 9 pm “The situation is critical,” he said. But his government is determined to avoid another blockade. Everyone is called to do their part to stay healthy and help the economy.
Italy set another record Sunday with 11,705 cases. Another 47 people died from or with the virus, far fewer than at the height of the pandemic in Italy in March and April, when more than 900 people died daily as a result of the infection. Italy was the first country in Europe to be seriously affected by the virus outbreak. After the UK, Italy has the second highest death toll in Europe with 36,543 deaths.
