The Robert Koch Institute has recorded 25,533 new corona infections and 412 deaths in Germany. Both values are below those of the previous week; however, due to holidays, the figures are only partially comparable.

German health authorities reported 25,533 new corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in one day. In addition, the authorities registered 412 deaths, as announced by the RKI. However, the RKI expects fewer tests and fewer reports from health authorities in the holidays, so the figures can only be compared to the previous week’s values to a limited extent.

Last Friday, health authorities reported a maximum of 33,777 infections, but this included 3,500 late reports. There were also 813 deaths. The peak of 952 deaths was reached last Wednesday (December 16).

Saxony has the highest incidence

According to the RKI, the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants reported to health authorities within seven days, the so-called seven-day incidence, is 188.8. On Tuesday, a national high of 197.6 was reached. Saxony achieved by far the highest value: there, the seven-day incidence is 441.3, that is, more than double the national average. Thuringia follows with a value of 320.6. The lowest value is recorded in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with 87.1.

The seven-day incidence is a key measure for the imposition and relaxation of measures against the spread of the coronavirus. The goal of the federal government is to reduce the incidence below 50.

According to the RKI report on Thursday, the seven-day national R-value was 0.97 (previous day: 0.92). This means that 100 infected people infect 97 more people. The value represents the onset of the infection 8 to 16 days ago. If it is below 1 for a long time, the infection process subsides.

The vaccination campaign begins on December 27

Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 1,612,648 confirmed infections with the coronavirus in Germany. The total number of people who died from or involved a corona infection is 29,182. According to estimates, around 1,206,200 people are now considered recovered.

To further contain the pandemic, the nationwide vaccination campaign will begin on December 27 with the first vaccine approved in Europe by the companies Biontech and Pfizer. Because the vaccine is still in short supply at first, people over the age of 80 get vaccinated first. Nursing home residents and all people working in outpatient or hospital care, as well as medical personnel who are at increased risk of coming into contact with the virus, are among the first to be vaccinated.
