Coronavirus in Germany: growing number of infections, stronger calls

The number of corona infections is increasing by leaps and bounds, and the policy calls on citizens not to miss out on what has been achieved so far. The virus is spreading especially in big cities. More and more places exceed the warning value.

The federal government is alarmed by the sharp increase in the number of corona infections in Germany. The focus is increasingly on developments in large cities. Health Minister Jens Spahn calls for vigilance and swift countermeasures in place to keep the situation under control.

The recent increase to more than 4,000 new infections in a day is concerning, said the CDU politician in Berlin. Federally owned Robert Koch Institute (RKI) President Lothar Wieler cautioned:

“The virus may be spreading out of control.”

The head of the chancellery, Helge Braun (CDU), already sees the beginning of the so-called second wave. The RKI counted 4,058 new corona infections in 24 hours. That’s 1,200 more than Wednesday, when 2,828 new infections were reported, a new record since April. The last time he was older was in the first week of April.

More and more large cities above the warning value

Development in big cities is considered key: in Berlin and other cities, the so-called 7-day incidence has already exceeded the critical value of 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants. Across the capital, the value jumped to 52.8 on Thursday. Previously, only a few districts were affected.

In addition to Berlin, Bremen is currently breaking the limit, as is Frankfurt: the Hessian metropolis has 59.1 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants. According to the city, the red escalation level of the state of Hesse goes into effect.

Curfew in Frankfurt

The goal now is to loosen the contact density. This should be implemented, among other things, with a curfew between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Chancellor Angela Merkel wants to discuss the situation with the mayors of Germany’s eleven largest cities in a video conference on Friday. He will learn about the Corona situation and the measures taken there, said a government spokesman in Berlin.

“Classic start of a second wave”

Chancery chief Braun told RTL / ntv that in some large cities it is seen not only that the important threshold of 50 is being exceeded, but also that the numbers are increasing very rapidly.

“This means that contact tracing in health authorities may no longer work in some places, and that is the classic beginning of a second wave,” says Braun. Control over these regions must be regained.

“The pandemic will be decided in the metropolis”

Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder warned on ZDF on Thursday that some cities like Berlin were on the verge of losing control. The mayor of Hamburg, Peter Tschentscher, had previously said: “The pandemic will be decided in the metropolises.”

Spahn emphasized that it now depends on the balance between trust and mindfulness. This affects all citizens, by observing protection rules such as distance and masks, as well as being careful when celebrating. The minister appealed to the citizens:

“It is up to all of us if we can make it happen. If 80 million join, the chances of the virus being drastically reduced.”

This pandemic is also “a test of character for us as a society.” In the cold season, ventilation and a wide range of uses of the Corona warning app are also important.

RKI boss is alarmed

According to Spahn, it is mainly the younger people who are infected, but not only. In particular, they were often considered inviolable. “But they are not”. Covid-19 is still a serious disease.

Faced with the growing number of infections, the president of RKI, Wieler, did not dare to predict how things would continue: “The current situation worries me a lot.” There is no way of knowing how the situation will develop in the coming weeks. “But we may see more than 10,000 new cases a day.”
