For the third time in just over a month, the number of new corona cases per day has passed the 2000 mark. At the same time, the rate of positive tests is increasing. Virologist Drosten cautions against wasting success.

For the third time in a month, more than 2,000 new corona infections have been recorded in Germany. Health authorities reported 2,143 new cases in one day, according to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI).

On August 22, the value was 2,034, last Saturday with 2,297 new corona infections, the highest value since April was reached. “After a temporary stabilization of the number of cases to a higher level, a further increase in transmissions is currently observed in the population in Germany,” said the RKI.

Drosten asks for a closer look at other countries

In a World Health Summit interview that was widespread on Wednesday but took place some time ago, Berlin virologist Christian Drosten said, with a view to future global developments: “The pandemic is just beginning. Here too.” . Germany should not rest on its supposed successes. Facing autumn, it is necessary to analyze in a much more differentiated and close way the evolution abroad. “We have to stop talking about things like football stadiums. It really is completely misleading.”

An indication that the infection situation is recovering again is that a higher proportion of corona tests were positive recently. According to the RKI management report, the so-called positive rate was 1.19 percent in the week of September 14 to 20 (previous week: 0.86). That is the highest value in more than ten weeks.

Very significant increase in Bavaria and Berlin

There is also an evolution in the incidence of 7 days at the national level: the number of new infections registered per 100,000 inhabitants in a week was 13.2 on Wednesday. A week earlier it was 11.5 and two weeks ago it was 9.9. According to the RKI, the 7-day incidence is currently very clear in the federal states of Bavaria and Berlin, significantly higher in Hamburg and North Rhine-Westphalia and slightly above the national average in Baden-Württemberg and Bremen.

So far no noticeable change has been seen in the so-called replay number, or R-value for short: according to RKI’s management report on Wednesday, it was 0.79 (previous day: 0.92). This means that an infected person infects less than another person on average. However, the R value represents the infection rate approximately one and a half weeks earlier.

Much more is being tested

So far there has been little change in the still low occupancy rate of intensive care beds. According to experts, it is due, among other things, to the fact that proportionally many younger people have recently been infected, developing less severe symptoms. According to the RKI, the proportion of cases in the older population is currently increasing slightly. “If older people are infected again, more serious cases and deaths will occur again.”

The peak of new infections reported daily was in late March / early April at over 6000. In the spring, however, far fewer tests had been performed, and the number of new infections detected depends, among other things, on the amount of tests.

Almost 10,000 deaths by corona in Germany

According to the RKI, at least 278,070 people in Germany have been shown to have been infected with the Sars-CoV-2 virus since the beginning of the Corona crisis. Therefore, the number of deaths related to a corona infection is 9428. That is 19 more than the day before. Around 246,900 people survived the infection according to RKI estimates.
