Coronavirus: Horst Seehofer calls for an immediate blockade

Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer cautions against waiting until after Christmas with a lockdown on the fight against the corona virus. “The only chance to regain control of the situation is a shutdown, but it has to happen immediately,” the CSU politician told SPIEGEL. “If we wait until Christmas, we will have to struggle with the high numbers for months.”

Seehofer was angry about the current situation. He was really angry, the minister said. The advantage that Germany fought for in the spring during the pandemic has been lost. Seehofer made it clear that this is not due to a lack of discipline on the part of citizens, “but mainly to inadequate measures”.

In late October, after the prime ministers’ conference with the Federal Chancellor, he had the feeling that not all heads of government had correctly recognized the seriousness of the situation, the interior minister said. “I slept badly after.”

The federal and state governments want to hold a high-level meeting Sunday between Chancellor Angela Merkel and state prime ministers to discuss further exacerbations in the crown crisis.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported both new highs in the number of new infections and the number of deaths from corona on Friday. Then 29,875 people registered as newly infected in 24 hours, that’s 6,000 more than on Friday a week ago. Only one record had been set the day before. Overall, the number of infections in Germany is 1,272,078.
