According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), German health authorities reported 7,595 newly diagnosed corona infections within 24 hours on Wednesday morning. The value is below the previous high of last Saturday, when 7,830 new infections were reported.

The seven-day incidence, the number of new corona infections per 100,000 residents in seven days, was given by the RKI on Wednesday as a national average of 51.3. The day before the value was 48.6.

On October 15, the federal and state governments decided that locally stricter rules should be applied if the values of 35 or 50 new infections per 100,000 people in a week are exceeded in the regions. Because from this value it becomes increasingly difficult to trace all the contacts of newly infected people.

According to RKI’s daily summary of the situation in the federal states, Bavaria, Berlin, Bremen, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia and Saarland were above this level on Wednesday. Hamburg had already announced on Monday that the number of new infections had exceeded 50 per 100,000 and on Wednesday it reported a seven-day incidence of 58.9, while the city, according to official RKI figures, was still just below 50s -Mark lies. The different numbers can be explained by the delay in notification, which sometimes means that information from local authorities only reaches the RKI late.

On Saturday, the number of new infections hit a record for the third time in a row since the start of the corona pandemic in Germany. However, the current values are not directly comparable to those of the spring, because many more tests are now being carried out and fewer infections are not detected.

According to experts, recently reported infections are an indication of how strong the virus was in society about a week ago due to the time between infection, test, result, and report. That is why it will take some time before policy measures can be reflected in the registration figures.

Urgent appeal to the population

“Currently, an accelerated increase in the number of transmissions can be observed in Germany,” the RKI wrote in its management report on Tuesday. “Therefore, an urgent call is made for the entire population to commit to protection against infections.” The RKI also includes rules for distance and outdoor hygiene, ventilation of indoor spaces and, if necessary, covering the mouth and nose.

More recently, nearly a third of all RKI-registered districts and cities were above the threshold of 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants per week (data as of October 21). In around 30 districts and cities, the value was even higher than 100.

According to the RKI, at least 380,762 people in Germany have been shown to have been infected with the Sars-CoV-2 virus since the beginning of the Corona crisis. Therefore, the number of deaths related to a corona infection was 9875. That was 39 more than the day before. According to RKI estimates, around 302,100 have been recovered.
