Coronavirus: disease or infection: what does the vaccine prevent?

The decision is made in the throat. If the coronavirus can spread in the upper respiratory tract despite vaccination, the viral load increases and with it the probability of infection, says Michael Hölscher, Director of the Tropical Institute of the Munich University Hospital, the SPIEGEL. With every sneeze, every cough, every drop of breath, viruses can leave the throat and seek a new host.

So far it is clear that the first Covid-19 vaccine from Biontech and Pfizer approved in the EU can prevent diseases caused by the coronavirus. However, it remains to be seen whether it will completely stop the virus in the throat before it enters the body. The question remains unanswered for both Moderna and AstraZeneca vaccine candidates that could eventually be approved.

By vaccination for herd immunity?

However, there is no scientific negligence behind this, but rather a prioritization. Vaccines against other infections can also prevent disease, but not always the infection itself. For those vaccinated, this is not necessarily crucial. Because if they don’t get sick, most won’t feel the infection.
