Coronavirus: Britain likely to introduce 14-day quarantine for travelers

According to media reports, the British government plans to introduce a two-week quarantine for travelers coming to the UK. This is reported, among others, by the “Times” and the BBC.

The regulation is expected to apply from June. Foreigners and Britons coming to Britain by plane or ship would have to isolate themselves for two weeks and provide their address. This does not apply to travelers to Ireland, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man or to truck drivers who transport urgently needed supplies.

The BBC report cites unnamed sources from British airlines, while the Times refers to government circles. Prime Minister Boris Johnson plans to present a road map to ease the crown restrictions on Sunday night, and reports say he will also announce the new quarantine regime. The Interior Ministry was initially unavailable for comment.

The Association of British Airlines Airlines UK warned late last month of a quarantine order for travelers. “This proposal would effectively end international travel to the United Kingdom and cause immeasurable harm to the airline industry and the UK economy,” a statement said.

No contact restrictions in sight

The government has dashed hopes that the prime minister could announce considerable relief from contact restrictions within the country on Sunday night. “We have to be realistic that there will not be a dramatic change, we will be very careful if we ease the restrictions,” said Environment Minister George Eustice.

According to official statistics, the country has the highest number of deaths in Europe from the coronavirus. The death toll rose on Friday by 626 to 31,241. The British government has been criticized for taking action too late and not preparing properly. Johnson had ordered the British to stay home on March 23. Exceptions only apply to physical activity, as well as shopping for daily necessities, doctor visits, and the way you work, unless you are able to work from home. He had already ordered restaurants and bars closed a few days earlier.
