For months, Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) has been calling for caution in the crown crisis. The latest development in the number of infections worries her: the local sources of infection must be addressed very clearly, “otherwise we will have 19,200 infections a day by Christmas,” Merkel said, according to information from SPIEGEL, in a videoconference of the presidium of the CDU. Previously, the dpa news agency and the newspaper “Bild” had quoted the Chancellor with similar statements.

The infection figures in Europe are worrying, Merkel said, according to dpa. Everything had to be done in Germany to prevent the numbers from growing exponentially.

According to the daily “Bild”, the chancellor said that now priorities must be set: “Keep the economy going, keep schools and kindergartens open. Soccer is secondary,” Merkel said, according to the report. The Chancellor also views parties, restaurant visits, and religious events as problematic.

More than 11,000 new infections were recorded in France on Sunday. In Germany, the value was 1411 cases, on Saturday 2507, the highest value since April.

This Tuesday, the Chancellor wants to hold a videoconference with the Prime Minister to discuss measures against the growing number of infections in the pandemic. On the CDU circuit, she also expressed doubts that the Berlin state government is seriously trying to crack down on the outbreaks in light of the sharp rise in numbers in the capital. “Something has to happen in Berlin,” Merkel said.
