The Standing Commission on Immunization recommends a different vaccine for the second vaccination for younger AstraZeneca vaccinated people. Instead, BioNTech or Moderna should be given to people under the age of 60 after twelve weeks.

After the new age recommendation for the AstraZeneca corona vaccine went into effect, the Standing Commission on Immunization recommended a different vaccine for a second vaccination for younger people who had been vaccinated. Those under 60 years of age should receive one dose of Biontech / Pfizer or Moderna vaccine instead of the second dose of AstraZeneca vaccine after twelve weeks.

Meanwhile, the head of the Permanent Commission on Vaccination, Thomas Mertens, commented on the changing recommendations of his panel of experts regarding the AstraZeneca vaccine in “Spiegel”. “The Paul Ehrlich Institute (PEI) responsible for monitoring safety in Germany had recognized a very clear signal to which STIKO had to react,” Mertens said.

“The security system in Germany works”

He does not see any damage to the image of the vaccination campaign. “The current situation shows that the security system in Germany works. He thinks it is a shame” that here only the negative is emphasized. Now it depends on redistribution so as not to jeopardize the vaccination rate.

“In Germany there are enough people over 60 who want to get vaccinated against Covid-19 and have not yet been vaccinated. They can receive the AstraZeneca vaccine. Therefore, there are no doses of vaccine left,” Mertens emphasized.

The federal government decided on Tuesday to inoculate the AstraZeneca vaccine only to people over 60 years of age. The background for this is thrombosis, particularly among younger women. Younger people in vaccination groups one and two could “decide, together with the vaccinating physician, at the physician’s discretion and with an individual risk analysis after detailed information, whether they want to be vaccinated with AstraZeneca,” the decision said.
