Researchers around the world are searching for corona vaccines. Health Minister Spahn and Research Minister Karliczek reported how far away it is in Germany at noon.

When in Germany the first vaccine against that Coronavirus allowed – estimates so far diverge widely. More recently, there have been optimistic voices that possibly this year a preparation of the AstraZeneca company based on the Swedish-British investigation will be approved. In Russia, the world’s first was approved for wide use in the population in August, despite international concerns.

Federal health ministers reported Tuesday afternoon Jens spahn (CDU) and the Minister of Investigation Anja Karliczek (CDU) in Sedanas it is currently from the perspective of federal government a vaccine is ordered. The president of the Paul Ehrlich Institute, Klaus Cichutek, also participated in the press conference.

Corona vaccine: the Federal Government finances three companies with 750 million euros

As announced by Research Minister Karliczek, three companies have been selected to be funded as part of a special program decided in June. The federal government makes 750 million euros available for this.

The Mainz-based company Biontech, specializing in so-called mRNA vaccines, will receive funding of 375 million euros. The second beneficiary is the Curevac company from Tübingen, to which 230 million euros will be allocated. This company is also developing vaccines based on mRNA technology.

With a third company, IDT Biologika from Dessau-Roßlau, the financing talks are not yet fully concluded.

Karliczek does not expect the corona vaccine until 2021

The two German commercial vaccine projects of biotech startup Curevac in Tübingen and Biontech in Mainz have been conducting trial vaccines with people since June and April, respectively.

With the funding, all three companies should be able to scale up their projects and advance their research faster to test vaccines extensively and quickly. “Safety has the highest priority at the moment,” stressed Karliczek. People only accept safe vaccines, so only safe vaccines should be available. “I hope that all states will act like this. Even if the world is waiting for a vaccine, we will not take any risk,” said the CDU minister.

Therefore, Karliczek continues to assume that there will only be one corona vaccine for a large part of the population in the next year. A vaccine can only be used if the benefits outweigh the risks, he said. “We will not deviate from this line in Germany and Europe.”

Corona vaccine must go through three phases of testing before approval

According to Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn, a vaccine must go through three phases of testing before it can be approved in Germany. He expects that after a successful trial in phase three, it will only take “a few days, at most a few weeks” before the vaccine is available in doctors’ offices. The creation of centers in which a large part of the population can be vaccinated is also conceivable. According to Spahn, sufficient vaccination doses “for everyone” should be available in the foreseeable future after approval. Prior to this, priority must be given to who will be vaccinated first. In addition to members of the risk group, this will likely also include people who are at increased risk due to their occupational group, such as doctors and nurses. However, an ethical debate is still necessary for this.

Spahn re-emphasized that no corona virus vaccine should be introduced. “There will be a voluntary vaccination,” he said during the press conference. To achieve herd immunity, 55 to 65 percent of citizens in Germany would have to be vaccinated. “We are very, very confident that we will voluntarily reach the goal of a sufficiently high vaccination rate.”

According to Klaus Cichutek, president of the Paul Ehrlich Institute, approval depends on the course of the phase 3 trial. A vaccine could be found by the end of the year or early 2021, but this is not certain. “We wait,” Cichutek said. (with dpa)
