Virologist: don’t test yourself with rapid tests

Virologist Jonas Schmidt-Chanasit of the Hamburg Tropical Institute warns against corona testing with self-organized rapid tests. “The nasopharynx swab alone is very difficult for laypeople,” said the virologist. In the worst case, the test is negative even though it is highly contagious. Also, such a test is always just a snapshot. In any case, according to the health authorities, rapid tests cannot be purchased directly from individuals in Hamburg.

MV: Queries about new mandatory quarantine for travelers

This morning, members of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania state government are discussing the future course of the corona pandemic in a video conference. According to Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) plans, there should be a forced quarantine for residents of the state even after traveling to risky areas within Germany. “It is clear that we cannot just travel to risk areas, especially hotspots, in Germany and come back as if nothing had happened,” Schwesig said. Only people visiting their own children or parents in other federal states during the Christmas holidays will be excluded. Everyone else should be quarantined for ten days, which can only be shortened by two negative corona tests. The project has already sparked opposition. The Ombudsman, Matthias Crone, said that a new special path in the country would be legally very difficult. Freedom of movement is more restricted than anywhere else in Germany.
