An island paradise in the Atlantic Ocean is now open again: the federal government has declared two other neighboring countries of Germany as risk areas: Poland and Switzerland are now full corona risk areas with effect from next Saturday, in addition to much of Italy and almost all of Austria.
Great Britain, with the exception of the Channel Islands and overseas territories, all of Ireland and Liechtenstein will also be considered risk areas as of Saturday. There are also individual regions in Bulgaria, Estonia, Croatia, Sweden, Slovenia, and Hungary.
Canarias, on the other hand, is removed from the list of risks. The lifting of the travel advisory for the Canary Islands should please tour operators in particular. For them, the islands off the coast of Africa with their summery climate are one of the most important beacons of hope for the winter season throughout the year.
The federal government’s decision doesn’t mean that you can now book your Christmas vacation under the palm trees without worry. The lifting of the travel warning for Corsica lasted only one week.
That means classification as a risk area
The risk area classification and associated travel advisories from the Federal Foreign Office do not mean a travel ban, but should have the greatest possible deterrent effect on tourists. The good news for vacationers: they can cancel a trip that has already been booked if their destination is declared a risk zone. The bad: Returnees from risk areas currently have to be quarantined for 14 days, but can be released prematurely with a negative test.
With the new federal government decisions, all border areas with Germany, except for Denmark, are on the risk list. In Austria, only the southern federal state of Carinthia is excluded. There is also an exception for two small enclaves on the border with Germany.
Several tourist destinations in Italy are affected, including Rome, Milan, Venice, Tuscany and Sardinia. German vacationers who are there for the fall break must now be quarantined or “released” when they return, unless they are driving or flying home before Saturday.

The classification as a risk zone occurs when a country or region exceeds the limit of 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in the last seven days. This now applies in full to more than 130 countries and partially to a few more.
It is not recommended to travel to about 50 countries, regardless of the infection situation. The reason: there are still entry restrictions, quarantine rules or a ban on leaving the EU.
There are only individual countries that are still free of risk areas and for which travel is not discouraged. These include Greece and Cyprus.
