The “Mouth of Truth” is a popular tourist attraction in Rome. If you put your hand in and lie, it will rip it off, that’s what legend says Here, of all places, in the square next to the ancient sculpture “Bocca della Verità”, angry Italians gather in early September. They want to protest against the crown policy of their government and finally tell the truth. Or what they think it is.

“Freedom” and “We are the people” shouted the protesters. “My body is mine”, “No to masks and distance rules,” it says on its banners. It is a sunny Saturday afternoon, people have brought Italian flags, it is a great time for them. For months there was hardly any criticism of the government in Rome, now they want to change the mood on the street. “Our democracy is in danger,” says a speaker on stage, “the government has stolen the future of our children and grandchildren,” shouts another, “enough, enough, enough.”

It should be the beginning of a great protest movement. But only about 2000 citizens came; many of them stand a great distance from the stage and watch the show with growing amazement. When a speaker sends greetings from Donald Trump and claims that the president of the United States thinks of Italy every day, a mocking laugh breaks out at the edge of the square.
