Corona Situation in the EU: “We are deeply concerned”

In many European countries, the number of new corona infections is increasing rapidly. The EU is watching this development with concern and warns against a repeat of the situation as in the spring.

The EU Commission has urged member states to take decisive action against the spread of the corona pandemic. “This could be our last chance to avoid a repeat of this past spring,” said Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides. The current situation shows “very clearly that the crisis has not been left behind.”

The EU is “deeply concerned” by the growing number of new infections in many member states. In some countries, the current situation is even worse than at the peak of the pandemic last spring. This shows that the measures taken so far “have not always been sufficient to reduce or control risk.” Therefore, EU member states must intervene immediately at the first sign of a new outbreak, the commissioner demanded.

Measures that should be applied across the board and uniformly across the EU include increased testing, contact tracing, better public health monitoring, better access to protective clothing and medicines, and capacity building in hospitals.

“Covid-19 fatigue”

In view of the emerging “Covid-19 fatigue”, especially among young people, the Commissioner called on the population to continue to comply with the distance and hygiene rules.

The head of the EU epidemic authority, ECDC, Andrea Ammon, was also concerned. “It is the responsibility of each individual to take the necessary personal protection measures,” Ammon emphasized. “The pandemic is far from over and we must not be careless.”

EU experts concluded that keeping your distance, hygiene rules and wearing face masks alone obviously cannot stop the spread of the virus. In this context, ECDC called for a specific strengthening of health systems. Members of risk groups and employees in the health sector should be better protected.
