German health authorities reported 8,103 new corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in one day. In addition, 96 new deaths were recorded in 24 hours. That comes from the RKI numbers for Sunday. The data reflects the status of the RKI dashboard since 3.11 am, subsequent changes or additions to the RKI are possible.

On Sunday, the number of cases reported by the RKI is typically lower, in part because fewer tests are conducted on weekends. Exactly a week ago, the RKI had recorded 7,890 new infections and 157 new deaths in one day.

According to the RKI, the number of new infections reported in seven days per 100,000 population (seven-day incidence) was 66.1 nationwide on Sunday morning and thus slightly higher than the previous day (65 , 6). The number of new infections in Germany dropped significantly for weeks in January and February. However, it recently stalled, which is probably also due to the spread of more contagious variants.

More than 2.5 million infections detected

Four weeks ago, on February 7, the incidence had been 76. Its previous peak was reached on December 22 at 197.6. On January 14, the peak of 1,244 recently reported deaths was reached. For new infections registered within 24 hours, the highest value was reached on December 18 at 33,777, but it contained 3,500 late reports.

The RKI has counted 2,500,182 infections detected with Sars-CoV-2 in Germany since the beginning of the pandemic. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections go undetected. The RKI stated the number of those who had recovered at around 2,304,300. The total number of people who died with or with a proven Sars-CoV-2 infection increased to 71,900.

According to RKI’s situation report on Saturday, the national seven-day R-value was 1.06 (previous day 1.04). This means that, in theory, 100 infected people infect 106 more people. The value represents the onset of the infection 8 to 16 days ago. If it is below 1 for a longer period of time, the infection process subsides; if it is constantly higher, the number of cases increases.
