Corona patients in Germany: new high in intensive care units

There are currently 3005 intensive care beds occupied with corona patients; this is a new record compared to spring. The situation is even more critical than in April, they say.

The number of corona-infected people treated in the intensive care unit in Germany has reached a new record. According to the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine (DIVI), 3,005 intensive care beds were occupied by Covid patients on Monday. 1,688 (56 percent) of these are invasively ventilated. According to DIVI, the previous high was reached on April 18 with 2,933 Covid 19 patients in intensive care units.

Situation worse than in April

In fact, the situation in the clinics is currently even worse than in the spring, DIVI chief Uwe Janssens told the German press agency. There are many more infected patients in the other wards, some of whom will still end up in the intensive care units. The whole infection situation is not comparable to that of April.

Unlike the April 18 peak, this time there will be no slowdown, the increase will continue for the time being, Janssens said. The reason is that the respective number of new infections is only reflected with a delay in the severe courses and finally in the occupation of intensive care units. “In four weeks we will see the consequences of the maximum values now.” Some centers are already at the limit and Covid 19 patients must be transferred to other clinics.

DIVI Daily Report: Almost 8,400 Free Intensive Care Beds

According to DIVI’s current daily report, clinics in Germany reported nearly 8,400 free intensive care beds (as of November 9, 12:15 pm), with sufficient technology and staff available. Since April, the Divi intensive care registry and the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) have been providing data on unoccupied and occupied intensive care beds in around 1,300 acute care hospitals in Germany.

A notification requirement applies to clinics. Among other things, the number of occupied intensive care beds and the total number of occupied beds are recorded, regardless of the diagnosis. In addition, clinics must report how many corona-infected people are currently being treated in intensive care or are being invasively ventilated and how many free ventilation sites there are.

13,363 new infections in Germany

Meanwhile, more than 13,000 new coronavirus infections have been recorded in one day in Germany. According to the RKI, 13,363 new cases of infection were registered. Since not all health authorities transmit this data on weekends, the new RKI case numbers tend to be lower on Sundays and Mondays than on other days of the week. In Germany, a total of 671,868 cases of infection have been registered since the start of the pandemic. The number of deaths related to the coronavirus rose to 11,352, 63 more than the previous day. The number of people recovered was around 429,600.
