The Italian government wants to mitigate the consequences of the corona pandemic by spending billions. The cabinet supports an additional spending of around 40 billion euros. The EU should be involved in this too.

The Italian government of Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has decided “a substantial increase in the budget” to protect the health and economic stability of citizens. The government announced that the cabinet approved the bill presented by the Minister of Finance, Roberto Gualtieri, for the 2021 budget year and the multi-year budget until 2023.

Help the health and education system

The draft provides measures for an approximate value of 40,000 million euros. Among other things, some four billion euros are planned for the health system, with which the temporary contracts of some 30,000 doctors and nurses will be extended. Around six billion euros will go to schools and universities, and four billion will go to aid in sectors of the economy in crisis.

In addition, the center-left government wants to complete a special unemployment fund. Large sums are planned for families, tax reform and support for the poor in the South.

The economy contracts in the corona pandemic

The spending will reportedly be financed partly through debt and partly with help from the European Union. The draft will be brought to parliament shortly and then sent to the EU Commission, he said.

Government experts expect the economy in Italy to collapse by nine percent this year as a result of the corona pandemic. At the same time, there is an expectation that gross domestic product will expand again by six percent in 2021.

Memory of deceased medical professionals

Italy was the first country in Europe to be hit massively by the corona pandemic. Today the 179 doctors who died with the coronavirus were remembered. For them there was a ceremony in the city of Duno, north of Milan. Among the names immortalized in marble is that of Roberto Stella, the first Italian doctor known to have died from the virus. His death on March 11 is symbolic of the dangerous work of medical professionals.

Meanwhile, the development of the pandemic in Italy is again worrying: 11,705 new infections were registered in 24 hours, a record, according to data from the Ministry of Health. The infection was detected in just over 10,000 people on both Saturday and Friday. In the course of the pandemic, a total of more than 402,000 infections were recorded and 36,474 people died with Covid-19.
