There have never been so many corona deaths and new infections in 24 hours in the United States, possibly as a result of Thanksgiving. California tightened the requirements and imposed curfews in some cases.

In the US, the number of new corona infections has reached a new record. As of Thursday, 217,664 new cases were registered in 24 hours, according to data from Johns Hopkins University (JHU). The highest value so far was recorded on Friday a week ago with about 205,000 new cases.

The number of deaths reported in one day also reached a new record. On Thursday there were 2,879 deaths with a confirmed coronavirus infection. The highest value so far had only been recorded the day before with 2804 deaths.

California tightened the requirements

After the Thanksgiving holiday last week, experts expected a rise in infections nationwide. The CDC health authority had advised against family visits and travel in advance. However, many people did not comply.

In the most populous state of California, stricter measures are expected to help fight the pandemic. For example, exit restrictions and other requirements are tightening in regions with the threat of overcrowding in intensive care units.

Nearly 14 million infections in total

In total, more than 13.9 million people have been infected by the corona virus in the country of around 330 million inhabitants. Since the beginning of the pandemic, more than 273,000 people have died from the pathogen Sars-CoV-2. In absolute terms, that is more than in any other country in the world.

The Johns Hopkins website is regularly updated and therefore shows a level higher than the official figures from the World Health Organization. In some cases, the numbers are updated later. The JHU had already reported more than 3,000 deaths during one day by Wednesday, but subsequently corrected this value downward.
