Corona pandemic: authorities report 32,552 new infections

In Germany, more than 32,500 new corona infections were recorded in one day. This has reached the level of the highs of the week before Christmas. According to the RKI, this is probably due to late registrations as well.

German health authorities reported 32,552 new corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in 24 hours. In addition, 964 new deaths were recorded, as announced by the RKI.

Late registrations guarantee a large number

However, the figures are only partially comparable with the values of the previous week. The RKI expected fewer tests and fewer reports from health authorities during the Christmas period. From RKI’s point of view, the current high numbers are also due to late registrations. A week ago there were 32,195 new infections and 802 new deaths in one day. On Wednesday, the RKI announced a new daily high of more than 1,100 deaths.

Differences between federal states

The seven-day incidence, that is, the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants reported to health authorities in seven days, was 139.8. Its previous high was reached on December 22 at 197.6. The differences between the federal states are still huge: Saxony had the highest incidence with 326.7 and Thuringia with 246.5; Schleswig-Holstein had the lowest value with 77.1.

R value slightly increases

The RKI has counted 1,719,737 infections detected with Sars-CoV-2 in Germany since the beginning of the pandemic. The total number of people who died with or with a proven coronavirus infection rose to 33,071. The RKI stated the number of those who had recovered at around 1,328,200. The seven-day national R-value was 0.68 according to the RKI report on Wednesday, after 0.67 on Tuesday.

The R-value of 0.68 means that, theoretically, 100 infected people infect 68 more people. The value represents the onset of the infection eight to 16 days ago. If it is below 1 for a long time, the infection process subsides. However, in its report, the RKI emphasizes that at the end of the year corona cases are only shown, recorded and transmitted with a delay, “so the R value can also be underestimated.”
