In a laboratory in Augsburg, a large number of corona tests gave false positive. The fair’s large test center is not affected, but Augsburg residents may still have received incorrect results.

The Augsburg MVZ Laboratory is a large provider of laboratory services. According to a newspaper report, numerous corona PCR tests are said to have produced false positive results in the laboratory. As Münchner Merkur reports, a clinic in Taufkirchen / Vils in Upper Bavaria failed to explain a large backlog of positive cases. Therefore, the clinic had the patients evaluated a second time. According to the report, 58 of the 60 positive tests would have been false. That could have an impact on Augsburg’s numbers, but probably not too much.
Incorrect corona tests – the reason is assumed to be a bottleneck in the delivery of a verification medium
The managing director of the MVZ laboratory in Augsburg, formerly Schottdorf, explains the error with the shortage of reagents. There was a bottleneck in a manufacturer’s delivery. Therefore, it was necessary to resort to another means of testing last week, which was apparently not compatible. Due to the large number of samples and the lack of accessories, it was not possible to verify positive results quickly in all cases, the managing director is more quoted.
The city said it was not yet clear whether Augsburg’s infection figures would have to be corrected due to the test’s failure. However: at the Augsburg test center at the fair, where 900 to 1000 people were tested daily recently, the case is at least not a problem. Tobias Hock from operator Bäuerle Ambulanz announces that they are working with another laboratory in Hof in Upper Franconia. When asked by our editorial team, Hock said: “We are not aware of any issues as described in the report and there are no references to this either.” Stains that the health department in
Augsburg do it yourself, they are evaluated by the State Health Office, Augsburg University Hospital evaluates the corona tests themselves.
If Augsburg residents are also affected, the city’s crown numbers will be corrected
However, it can be assumed that general practitioners will work with the laboratory. The MVZ laboratory in Augsburg also offers its own smear site, but it is only open to people with no symptoms or proven contact with infected people. Dr. Thomas Wibmer from the health department says that it cannot therefore be ruled out that Augsburg residents are also affected by false positive results. If the Augsburgers test results were incorrect, the number of cases would have to be adjusted retrospectively. However, based on the current state of affairs, no dramatic changes in the city’s figures are apparently expected.
Thomas Wibmer further explains: “We know that MVZ is now writing to those people for whom the test result is wrong. Then people in Augsburg are asked to take the test again and notify the health department the result of the new test. If the residents of Augsburg are affected, they will be released from quarantine in case of a false positive result or quarantine will be ordered if the result was false negative. “
