Corona outbreak: health department seeks around 100 guests at the “Katzen” bar in Hamburg

After positive corona tests carried out by employees of a bar in Hamburg’s Schanzenviertel, the authorities surmised that around 600 people frequented there and, in the worst case, could have been infected. Already 500 people from almost every district in Hamburg who visited the “Katzen” bar on September 5, 8 or 9 have been contacted, said a spokesman for the Hamburg health authority. Many are already in quarantine. So far, six corona tests have been positive, “including several bar employees.” They are still looking for around 100 bar visitors. According to the information, many had left incorrect contact details and did not enter their names and phone numbers in the contact lists, but instead immortalized themselves there as “Lucky Luke” or “Darth Vader”.

This poses a problem in tracking possible chains of contagion in “cat” visitors. “Such behavior is stupid,” Helfrich said, since in the event of an incident one could not be informed and therefore also endanger others.

This was also emphasized by Altona District Office Manager Stefanie von Berg, tweeting: “Can’t reach ‘Darth Vader’ with wrong phone number. #Corona Contact Altona Health Department ! “

Last weekend the health department learned of the first cases of the “cat.” The operator had voluntarily closed the bar in the popular scene and party district, Helfrich said. Apparently, he had anticipated an imminent shutdown by the health department.

It doesn’t seem entirely unusual for guests to enter their contact lists at bars and restaurants with incorrect details. “It is well known that many guests do not register with their real names,” says a waitress from a neighboring bar on the shoulder blade. “The authorities should have checked that.” This cannot be expected of waitresses and bar operators. The woman does not want to express herself anymore. “It’s also about solidarity here in ski jumping.”

In Hamburg, restaurateurs have to pay a fine if they fail to ensure that their guests are included in Corona’s contact lists. However, they are not responsible for the veracity of the information. It’s also difficult to prosecute bar or restaurant visitors if they give false information, Helfrich says.

All people classified as so-called contact persons must now be quarantined for two weeks. Since infected waitresses worked in the bar, these were all the guests who entered the interior of the “cat” on the days mentioned after 7:00 pm “I suppose most of them are classified as contact persons and have to enter quarantined, “Helfrich said.

The health department only requests a crown test when symptoms occur. The quarantine cannot end prematurely with a negative test, as is the case with travelers returning from risk areas.

The number of new corona infections recorded in Hamburg increased by 46 cases on Thursday. The outbreak in the “cat” is not yet reflected in the numbers, Helfrich said. An overview of how many of the guests in question were actually infected at the bar will likely only be available next week.
