In Germany, 78,109 people have been vaccinated against the corona virus so far, 37,273 more than on Tuesday. This is reported by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), citing the status of the data from Wednesday at 11.00 a.m.
At the same time, the RKI notes that the difference from the previous day may include late registrations from previous days and does not always reflect the vaccines actually administered the day before. By then, the agency had reported nearly 42,000 vaccinations as of Tuesday morning.
The number of reported deaths related to the coronavirus has passed the 1,000 mark for the first time, a maximum.
In one day, German health authorities transmitted 1,129 new deaths to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), according to RKI figures from Wednesday morning. In addition, 22,459 new infections were reported. Last Wednesday (December 23), 24,740 new infections and the previous high of 962 deaths were reported.
Before Christmas, the RKI had announced that the current figures were only partially comparable with the values of the previous week, as it expected fewer tests and fewer reports from health authorities by the end of the year. Still, the number of new deaths on Wednesday morning was significantly higher than a week ago.
The number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants (incidence of seven days) reported to health authorities in seven days was 141.3 on Wednesday morning. Its previous high was reached on December 22 at 197.6.
However, the differences between federal states are huge: Saxony had the highest incidences on Tuesday with 330.0 and Thuringia with 255.1, Lower Saxony had the lowest value with 79.6.
Since the beginning of the pandemic, the RKI has counted 1,687,185 infections detected with Sars-CoV-2 in Germany (as of December 30, midnight). The total number of people who died with or involving a proven Sars-CoV-2 infection rose to 32,107 on Wednesday, while the RKI indicated that the number of people who recovered was around 1,302,600. There are currently around 352,500 active corona cases in Germany.
R value
According to the RKI report on Tuesday evening, the national seven-day R-value was 0.67 (Monday: 0.74). This R value means that 100 infected people infect another 67 people. The value represents the onset of infection 8-16 days ago. If it is below 1 for a long time, the infection process subsides.
In its report, however, the RKI emphasizes that at the turn of the year corona cases are only shown, recorded and transmitted with a delay, “so the R-value can also be underestimated.”
How common is Corona around the world?
The private Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore (USA) determines the world number of corona cases. If you compare the German Johns Hopkins numbers to the RKI, then the RKI appears to be lagging behind in registering new corona cases. Reason: Both institutions determine the number of cases in different ways.
This is how the RKI works
As the independent federal authority for infectious diseases, the Robert Koch Institute is currently determining all of our lives with its numbers, examinations, and the knowledge gained from them.
People with 90 different professions from 50 countries work there. Of the 1,296 employees, 1,224 are in Berlin and 72 in the Wernigerode branch. The Berlin 24/7 Situation Center alone has 150 employees.
