Because: “saving lives is a duty”

Lower Saxony Prime Minister Stephan Weil (SPD) called in his New Year’s speech to continue to consistently abide by Corona’s rules. “Many are struggling with restrictions that became particularly noticeable earlier this year.” But he emphasized: “We act in this way to save human lives and protect the health of countless people. That is our duty.” Weil said Lower Saxony is significantly less affected by corona infections than most other federal states in Germany. With corona vaccines started a week ago, the foundation for a return to normal life will be laid. But it is also clear that the country is going through a serious economic crisis and that many people are concerned about their work. “Corona has taught us where we have to improve, for example in our healthcare sector, but also in digitization.”

Despite fires and illegal parties: quiet New Year’s night in the north

The turn of the year was much quieter than usual due to the corona pandemic. In northern Germany, the police and fire brigade had to move much less frequently than in previous years. However, there were operations for fires, accidents and illegal parties. In Oldenburg, the police broke down an apartment door; inside, 18 people celebrated New Year’s Eve. Several times police officers were thrown with firecrackers during operations. Many cities had banned lighting fireworks from streets and central squares on New Year’s Eve. The ban on gatherings still applies across the country today.

Nearly 23,000 new corona infections nationwide

Health authorities reported 22,924 new corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in 24 hours. In addition, 553 new deaths were recorded, the RKI announced. It is difficult to interpret the data at this time because less testing was done over the Christmas holidays and at the end of the year, and not all offices may have submitted their data. According to the RKI, this can lead to late registrations. A week ago, there were 25,533 new corona infections and 412 deaths nationwide in 24 hours.

Fear of the New Year’s rush – attract Harz visitors

The Harz district, municipalities, police and Tourism Association fear that many people may be attracted to the Harz for the New Year. However, this is undesirable due to the risk of infection. Therefore, we ask that you refrain from taking day trips. In many places “worrying conditions” had arisen in recent days, because due to the large number of guests, distances could not be maintained.
