Steinmeier on the Crown crisis: “Light at the end of the tunnel”
10.08 am: Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has been optimistic about the prospects in the fight against the corona virus. “I find the reports on the promising vaccine research quite encouraging,” Steinmeier told the German editorial network. “There is light at the end of the tunnel, but we don’t know how long it will take to get there.” Therefore, one should not give up efforts and discipline now. “We have mastered the state of emergency in Corona, now we will not fail for normality in Corona.”
Steinmeier said he understood stress and strains in people, but the path of caution was still necessary. The “fatigue of the crown” should not turn into cruelty. The federal president had repeatedly called for compliance with the crown’s rules. He doesn’t think there is another blockage. Everyone knew “that a second lockdown would be extremely damaging to the economy. And we shouldn’t expect the same level of acceptance that we had four or five months ago,” Steinmeier said. “That is why all federal and state policy is geared towards avoiding this scenario.”
He also suggested an official memorial time for the victims of the crown in Germany, but when and how is not yet clear. “The death of the crown is a lonely death,” Steinmeier told the Germany publishing network (RND, Saturday). Many patients in hospitals and nursing homes died without the support of their families and the bereaved could not have said goodbye. “We have to help people in their grief and think about how we can express our compassion.”
