Corona: Merkel refers to Portugal when asked about easing

secondChancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) has shown caution when it comes to the question of a possible relaxation of crown requirements despite declining infections. By the next Prime Minister’s Conference, likely on February 10, the federal and state governments hope to have more clarity on the spread of corona mutations, as Merkel said at a press conference in Berlin on Monday after the vaccination summit. That will play a role in the relaxation issue.

Merkel referred to the dramatic increase in the number of infections in Portugal, where the British variant of the corona virus had gained the upper hand in blocking. “We do not want that,” emphasized the Chancellor.

Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) said he saw the situation in order to alleviate “extremely skeptical”. Even before the vaccination summit, Söder said it was not the time to talk about further relaxation.

On Monday night, Söder again warned against rushing to relax if the risk of mutation increased.

“We are still a long way from what could lead to extensive easing,” Söder said. When it comes to stability and lockdown, he stressed that “the option is more likely to be the best,” he said.
