The Lower Saxony state government is withdrawing the relaxation of the crown rules that were actually planned for Christmas and New Year’s Eve. The reason is that the number of infections is increasing again.

From December 19 to January 10, the current rules of contact in the country will remain in effect, Prime Minister Stephan Weil (SPD) said on Thursday in Parliament. A maximum of five people from two households plus their children under 14 can meet in public and private spaces. According to Weil, this regulation should also apply to New Years Eve and New Years. “This is a turning point and we know it very well,” said the head of government. But the turn of the year in particular poses a very special risk to the infection process: “We shouldn’t do that this year.” The state government wants to allow family reunions with up to ten relatives and their partners between December 24 and 26, not counting children under the age of 14.

“It’s about human life”

Christmas and New Year’s Eve should be different this year, Weil said. But compared to a virus that got out of control, that seems to be the lowest price. “At the end of the day, it’s about protecting human life and nothing less,” Weil said. Small increases in the number of infections also need to be taken very seriously, otherwise it could quickly turn into a large increase, Weil said. That shows experience.

Holidays as opportunity and risk

In this sense, vacations are both an opportunity and a risk. On the one hand, gatherings and celebrations that also include alcohol are the ideal base for the corona virus. On the other hand, the days before and after the party are also days of general slowdown in our society. That is why the state government wants to follow the advice of many, including scientists, and create the conditions for a very calm and peaceful holiday and a particularly calm and peaceful New Year.
