Poll: Corona Christmas’s fear of loneliness is near
The Corona crisis also affects the population’s concerns about Christmas. That is the result of a survey on behalf of Kaufmännische Krankenkasse (KKH) among around 1000 people in Germany. More than half of those surveyed by Forsa (54 percent) are concerned that a family member will have to spend the holidays in bed or even in a clinic, either because of Covid-19 or another illness.
41 percent fear having to celebrate the festival in small groups or even alone due to the pandemic. Nearly one in four (23 percent) worries about not being able to travel on vacation. In a similar survey two years ago, 44 percent were afraid of getting sick at Christmas and were asked no questions about loneliness or travel.
In 2018, about one in four felt stressed by digital Christmas wishes, photos and videos that were shared through WhatsApp & Co., in the year Corona is only 15 percent. “It’s not surprising, because digital communication is often the only way to keep in touch,” says the KKH.
The rush in city centers overwhelmed nearly half of those surveyed in 2018, and in early November 2020 just a little less than a third, now most likely out of fear of infection. At some points, people are seemingly more relaxed in Corona times – only 10 percent of meal planning and the right to a perfect party feel under pressure (2018: 17 percent).
Even if there are no political decisions yet, respondents are pessimistic about New Year’s Eve. 56 percent fear having to give up toasting with family and friends because of Corona.
