The RKI has recorded 20,472 new corona infections. The seven-day incidence rose to 124.9. Given the numbers, intensive care physicians are calling for a strict closure and no more openings.

The infection situation in Germany is worsening: the seven-day incidence increased to 124.9, according to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI). The value is now higher than since January 19 (131.5). On Friday the RKI had given an incidence of 119.1, two weeks ago it was 76.1.

The seven-day incidence indicates the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants per week and is an important indicator of the course of the pandemic. After the number of new infections dropped significantly in the running of the bulls in mid-February, the number of infections rose again sharply, which experts also attribute to the widespread spread of more contagious variants.

More than 20,400 new infections

German health authorities reported 20,472 new corona infections to the RKI in 24 hours. In addition, 157 new deaths were recorded. That’s 1101 less than the day before, but more than 4000 more than a week ago. Exactly a week ago, the RKI had recorded 16,033 new infections and 207 new deaths in one day. On January 14, the peak of 1,244 recently reported deaths was reached.

The RKI has counted 2,755,225 infections detected with Sars-CoV-2 in Germany since the beginning of the pandemic. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections go unrecognized. The RKI stated the number of people who had recovered at 2,477,500. The total number of people who died with or with a proven Sars-CoV-2 infection increased to 75,780.

According to RKI’s management report on Friday night, the seven-day national R-value was 1.14 (previous day 1.08). This means that, in theory, 100 infected people infect 114 more people. The value represents the onset of the infection eight to 16 days ago. If it is below 1 for a longer period of time, the infection process subsides; if it is consistently higher, the number of cases increases.

Intensive care doctors call for a strict lockdown

The president of the DGIIN Society of Intensive Care Medicine, Christian Karagiannidis, is calling for a strict closure and immediate halt of all planned initial steps in light of the rapidly increasing number of infections. “Resolutions for model projects after Easter are completely inappropriate and should be withdrawn immediately by the federal and state governments,” said Karagiannidis, who is also the scientific director of the intensive Divi registry of the “Rheinische Post.” “It takes a combination of tight lockdown, a lot of vaccinations and tests. This is the only way to keep intensive care units from overflowing,” he said. This blockade must be applied throughout the country and last two weeks. “I ask the politicians not to abandon the hospital staff.”

Other doctors and virologists had also criticized the opening course of some countries. SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach told the Funke media group newspapers: “It is very clear that we are growing exponentially and we can reach daily numbers of 30,000, 40,000, 50,000 infected in a short time.” Therefore, some other countries are pulling the “emergency brake” and tightening measures again.
