meFirst in Bavaria, then in North Rhine-Westphalia, now also in Berlin: in more and more regions of Germany, cities and districts are scratching the mark of 50 infected per 100,000 inhabitants in the last seven days, or exceeding the call incidence from which renewed restrictions are possible.
The dynamics of infections are again similar to that of the return wave in August. In an average of seven days, the number of new corona cases is 31 percent, almost a third more than the previous week, and the number of active cases 18 percent above the comparative value.
However, this time the infections are much more difficult to detect. Returning travelers, from risk zones and ‘safe’ vacation countries, can often be screened for free at train stations, airports and border crossings.
However, the new infections in the past week are often associated with private or even illegal celebrations, drinking and socializing. Health authorities must first identify contact persons before tests can be performed; it is becoming increasingly difficult to take this step. An overview of the hotspots in Germany.
Hamm
With 87.1 new infections per 100,000 residents, the town of Hamm has significantly passed the 50 mark in seven days. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) showed a value of 64.8 on Tuesday. RKI numbers and municipalities often differ due to information channels. Hamm is at the top of the seven-day incidence list in North Rhine-Westphalia and has been above the critical value since Monday.
The city was hit “in full trouble” by a second corona wave, said Mayor Thomas Husteger-Petermann (CDU). The trigger is a big wedding with another partner party. There will be no far-reaching restrictions in town hall and will primarily target private events. Although nothing has been decided yet, it is considered “fundamentally sensible” to limit private celebrations, a spokesman said Monday night.
On Tuesday, the crisis team decided to close a temporary amusement park for the day. It was supposed to run through Sunday, it started with 1500 guests allowed a few days ago and on Sunday it was reduced to less than 1000 visitors allowed simultaneously. In addition, a mask requirement for teachers and pupils was introduced in secondary schools. Only five people or people from two households can meet in public spaces.
Wurzburg
Since September 10, that is, for twelve days, the incidence in the city of Lower Franconia has been above the critical value. The RKI currently reports 61.0 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last seven days.
The excess of the seven-day incidence is mainly due to returning travelers or their contact persons. Also, many infected people were infected at private parties and in restaurants and bars. Würzburg is one of the youngest cities in Germany, which also plays a role in the infection process, as announced by a city spokesperson at the request of WELT.
The head of the Würzburg health department, Dr. Johann Löw, appeals to young adults in “responsible professions” who are in contact with risk groups to adapt their leisure activities. Means: Geriatric nurses or midwives should stay away from a celebration.
There are also several alcohol bans. Restaurants are prohibited from serving alcoholic beverages between 11 pm and 6 am Drinking alcohol is no longer permitted on the Alte Mainbrücke on the weekend after 4 pm Restrictions also apply to the boardwalk and nightlife streets. In private celebrations, only 50 people are allowed to gather instead of 100. In public spaces, only five people instead of the previous ten who do not belong to the same household can travel together.
Cloppenburg
According to the RKI, the incidence in the Lower Saxony district is 56.1 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the last seven days. The outbreak can be traced back to a soccer team – almost the entire men’s team at SV Evenkamp tested positive last week.
In some district communities, only a maximum of six people can gather for private events through October 4. Restaurants must close by 10 pm Club sports are largely prohibited throughout the district and school sports are also prohibited. Some school classes are quarantined at home.
District administrator Johann Wimberg (CDU) was “concerned about the negligent behavior of some residents” on Sunday. After inspecting the measures, the police reported “appalling results”.
On Sunday night, police reported a series of rapes, including a pub with a “disco-like establishment” where around 80 guests celebrated. Private parties were also exposed, and obviously the guests knew very well that they were breaking the strictest rules. Officials captured party members in a party basement “who were not related to or from two households.” Some people tried to hide under tables or in a storage room. You have to wait for an administrative infringement procedure.
Munich
On Sunday, corona numbers in Munich reached 55.6 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants in a week, according to the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety (LGL), the incidence is currently 55.9. The RKI reports 49.3.
The city has identified private parties as the cause of many infections. The prime minister criticized him personally. “Munich has very high numbers, too high numbers,” said Markus Söder (CSU) on Monday. According to Söder, the Bundeswehr should support the Munich health department with follow-up.
As the first German metropolis with a population of more than a million, Munich decided to require a mask in public spaces in light of the increase in corona infections. It should apply from Thursday around Marienplatz and Viktualienmarkt, initially for seven days, as Mayor Dieter Reiter (SPD) announced on Monday after a crisis team meeting. Reiter said a general mask requirement across the city area had also been discussed, but this would not apply initially.
For private celebrations such as birthdays, weddings or funerals, there is a maximum limit of 25 people indoors and 50 people outdoors. As of Thursday, only five people or two households will be allowed to gather, both in private and public spaces and in restaurants. This also applies to the “Wirtshaus Wiesn”, a replacement party by some Munich restaurateurs for the unusual Oktoberfest.
Berlin-Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg
The Berlin district has only appeared in the list of the top ten municipalities with the most new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in the last seven days since Saturday. On Monday night, according to the Senate Health Department, Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg surpassed the critical mark of 50 with an incidence of 48.6 in seven days. However, there are still no restrictions, as the Berlin Senate wants to assess the infection rate in the city as a whole and not reduce it to individual districts. The Berlin Senate discussed increasing the number of infections on Tuesday, but did not initially make any decisions on new measures to contain the corona pandemic.
Berlin health senator Dilek Kalayci told the House of Representatives health committee on Monday that many infections in the district were linked to the “party behavior” of young Berliners. According to the district, the 20-35 age group is particularly affected. “The high number of infections in our district is often traced to young people and partiers. The places of infection are often clubs, private parties and unofficial venues in Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg, but also in other districts, “said Health Councilor Knut Mildner-Spindler (left). Since the clubs are still closed, some operators now they have switched to gastronomy or open beer gardens, people tend to celebrate anyway.
“The pace of new infections is accelerating,” Kalayci said. For the first time since the introduction of the traffic light system to assess the situation of the crown in Berlin, the change to double yellow has taken place. The reason is that the so-called reproduction number, or R-value for short, has increased to 1.52. The traffic light for the number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants has been yellow for eight days. If there are two yellow signs, the Senate wants to advise on additional restrictions. The third indicator, intensive care beds, remains green.
Gelsenkirchen
The Ruhr metropolis was on Tuesday with a 38.0 incidence in NRW in second place behind Hamm. Last week, the incidence approached the warning level of 35 that applies in North Rhine-Westphalia. A city spokesperson told WELT that the infections were mainly due to two large private celebrations. “Contact tracking is complex, but it works,” the spokesman said.
Weddings or special birthdays with up to 150 people are allowed at NRW. As of Tuesday, only 50 people will be allowed in Gelsenkirchen. In addition, the city canceled a large flea market, despite the organizer’s hygiene concept. If the incidence remains above the warning level of 35, Schalke 04’s Bundesliga game on Saturday against Werder Bremen will also be played without spectators.
Remscheid
The incidence at Bergische Stadt was 36.9 on Tuesday, and therefore also above the warning level of 35 across the NRW. The increase was largely due to “family groups returning to travel with school and daycare-age children,” as a spokeswoman said. With a new information campaign on protection measures, rules of conduct or the possibility of sanctions in case of violations, the aim is to achieve broad paternity in several languages.
The city wants to decide on new measures on Tuesday. A city-wide mask recommendation in public or more screening of protective measures is possible. Measured in terms of seven-day incidence, Remscheid in North Rhine-Westphalia ranks third after Gelsenkirchen and Hamm as the favorite.
