German health authorities reported 9,557 new corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) in one day. In addition, 300 new deaths were recorded in 24 hours. That comes from the RKI numbers for Saturday. Exactly a week ago, the RKI had recorded 9,762 new infections and 369 new deaths in one day. The data reflects the status of the RKI dashboard since 03.11 am, subsequent changes or additions to the RKI are possible.

According to the RKI, the number of new infections reported in seven days per 100,000 population (incidence of seven days) was 65.6 in the whole country on Saturday morning and, therefore, compared to the previous day (65 , 4) and last Saturday (63.8) a little more. The seven-day incidence is an essential benchmark when imposing or relaxing crown restrictions.

The federal and state governments initially target an incidence of 50. Openings, for example in retail, are only promised when the value 35 is reached.

The number of new infections in Germany dropped significantly for weeks in January and February. However, it has recently stalled, which could also be due to the spread of more contagious coronavirus variants.

Four weeks ago, on February 6, the incidence had been 77. Its previous peak was reached on December 22 at 197.6. On January 14, the peak of 1,244 recently reported deaths was reached. Among new infections registered within 24 hours, the highest value was reached on December 18 at 33,777, but it contained 3,500 late reports.

The RKI has counted 2,492,079 infections detected with Sars-CoV-2 in Germany since the beginning of the pandemic. The actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections go undetected. The RKI stated that the number of people recovered was around 2,299,400. The total number of people who died with or with a proven Sars-CoV-2 infection increased to 71,804.

According to RKI’s situation report on Friday night, the seven-day R-value nationwide was 1.04 (previous day 0.99). This means that 100 infected people infect 104 more people. The value represents the onset of the infection 8 to 16 days ago. If it is below 1 for a longer period of time, the infection process subsides; if it is constantly higher, the number of cases increases.
