The numbers are rising and rising: According to the Robert Koch Institute, health authorities have reported a record 14,964 new corona infections in one day. Many have never been registered in Germany since the beginning of the pandemic.
However, the values are only partially comparable to those of the spring, as many more tests are now underway and more infections are being discovered as a result. On Wednesday a week ago, however, the number was just 7,595. On Saturday, 14,714 new infections were recorded, the highest level since the start of the corona pandemic in Germany.
The new record numbers come at a delicate time. Over the course of the day, the federal and state governments want to agree on how to proceed with the corona pandemic. There are signs of a tightening of contact restrictions. People should reduce their private contacts to an “absolutely necessary minimum,” according to a federal motion for a resolution. At the same time, tight, short-term closures are being debated in politics. The economy worries about its possible consequences. SME President Mario Ohoven said: “For tens of thousands of companies this would be a fatal blow.”
R value at 1.17
The total number of corona cases in Germany was not initially updated on the Robert Koch Institute website. On Tuesday it was 449,275. The number of deaths has not been updated either, until Tuesday it was 10,098.
On Tuesday, the number of infections per 100,000 inhabitants in the last seven days at the national level was 87. The previous week (October 20), the RKI had reported an incidence of 48.6 cases. According to the RKI, about 70 percent of the districts have an incidence of more than 50. According to this information, eight districts have even more than 200.
The number of views, or R-value for short, was 1.17 in Germany according to the RKI situation report on Tuesday (previous day: 1.37). This means that 10 infected people infect almost 12 other people. The R value represents the infection rate approximately one and a half weeks earlier.
In addition, the RKI includes the so-called seven-day R in its management report. The value refers to a longer period of time and is therefore less subject to daily fluctuations. According to RKI estimates, this value was 1.21 on Tuesday. It shows the infection process from 8 to 16 days ago.
