According to the Robert Koch Institute, German health authorities reported 14,714 new corona infections in one day on Saturday morning, more than ever since the start of the corona pandemic in Germany. According to the RKI, a total of 418,005 people in Germany were infected with the virus (as of October 24, 00:00).

However, since there were occasional data gaps in the transmission of infection figures on Thursday, the latest number of new infections could contain corresponding late reports. Also on Saturday morning there were occasional inconsistencies in the figures given.

Due to a web server failure, according to RKI, transmissions from health authorities to responsible state authorities and from them to RKI were interrupted for almost three hours on Thursday afternoon. But then the server started working again. The missing data should have automatically transmitted on Friday during the day and therefore appear in the post on Saturday morning. The size of the data gap is not yet known. Corona’s hotspots in North Rhine-Westphalia, for example, were affected by the breakdown.

Also, the current values are only partially comparable with those of the spring, because now many more tests are being carried out and therefore more infections are being discovered.

The number of deaths related to the Covid-19 disease surpassed the 10,000 mark on Saturday. The RKI reported 49 more deaths in 24 hours, bringing the total to 10,003.

The number of views, or R-value for short, was 1.23 in Germany according to the RKI situation report on Friday (previous day: 1.11). This means that ten infected people infect about twelve more people. The R value represents the infection rate approximately one and a half weeks earlier.

In addition, the RKI includes the so-called seven-day R in its management report. The value refers to a longer period of time and is therefore less subject to daily fluctuations. According to RKI estimates, this value is now 1.30 (previous day: 1.23). It shows the infection process from 8 to 16 days ago.

Despite the sharp increase in the number of infections, hospitals see themselves well equipped for a second corona wave. The managing director of the German Hospital Society, Georg Baum, describes the current situation as manageable. “Hospitals are very alarmed without being agitated,” Baum told the “Mannheimer Morgen.” There are currently more than 8,000 vacant intensive care beds, and another 10,000 beds could be freed up by postponing unnecessary treatments. “Also, not all patients who come to the hospital with a corona infection need intensive medical treatment.”

According to Baum, 6,000 patients are currently being treated in hospitals for Covid-19, around 1,000 of them in intensive care. “The capabilities will be sufficient for a long time before it becomes questionable.” In order for the situation not to spiral out of control in the coming weeks and months, a lot of caution and a willingness for action is required.

According to RKI data, the number of Covid 19 patients in intensive care treatment had recently increased from 91 to 1,121. Almost 500 of them are ventilated.
