After vaccination began across the country, just under 42,000 people received the first dose of the corona vaccine in 48 hours. The Robert Koch Institute announced. However, those vaccinated are not yet safe from infection.

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), 41,962 people in Germany had been vaccinated against the corona virus up to and including Monday. The increase compared to the previous day was 19,084 vaccinations. However, this value does not correspond to the number of people vaccinated in one day, but it can also include late registrations, the RKI said.

In addition to the number of new corona-related infections and deaths, the RKI now also publishes the number of vaccinated German citizens daily to provide information on the status of the vaccination campaign. However, the RKI does not initially mention a vaccination quota, that is, the proportion of vaccinated in the total population. The number of people vaccinated is still too low, explained RKI spokeswoman Susanne Glasmacher.

Currently vaccines are registered with the first vaccination dose. A second vaccine should be given approximately three weeks after the first to achieve full vaccine protection. Therefore, it cannot be assumed that all vaccinated persons are already safely protected against cortonavirus infection.

12,892 new infections in Germany

“Some people develop adequate immune protection after the first vaccination, but others do not. With the booster shot, you make sure that those who want to get vaccinated are really protected,” said Andreas Podbielski, director of the Institute for Medical Microbiology, Virology and Hygiene. in der The University of Rostock recently explained.

German health authorities also reported 12,892 new corona infections in 24 hours. According to the RKI, another 852 people died from or with the virus. However, these numbers are only partially comparable to the values of the previous week, as the RKI expects fewer tests and fewer reports from health authorities by the end of the year.

Saxony with the highest incidence

Still, the number of deaths was less than 731 cases a week ago. On December 23, a maximum of 962 deaths was registered. The number of new infections was 19,528 a week ago. Across Germany, 1,664,726 people have been infected with the virus since the start of the pandemic, 30,978 people have died from a proven infection, according to the RKI.

The number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants reported to health authorities in seven days, the so-called seven-day incidence, was 149.2. Its previous high was reached on December 22 at 197.6.

However, the differences between federal states are huge: the highest incidences on Tuesday had Saxony with 364.7 and Thuringia with 273.7 the lowest value Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania with 77.2.
