“Corona has returned with all his might, with all his might”

Markus Söder urgently warns of the Corona crisis. He reads friendly hateful messages and surprises with a date for the end of the internal combustion engine.

According to CSU chief Markus Söder, Bavaria and the whole of Germany are facing a difficult fall and winter due to the Corona crisis. “Corona is back with all her might, with all her might,” said the Bavarian prime minister in her opening speech at the CSU digital party conference. In Germany, throughout Europe, the number of cases would already skyrocket. “Almost all neighbors report new record numbers every day.” The World Health Organization sees Europe in a very critical phase. “Because one thing is clear, autumn and winter are just around the corner and the situation will be much more difficult.”

Söder compared the pandemic to a natural disaster: “It may be the test of our time for our generation. We too have to pass this test.” So far, Germany has weathered the crisis relatively well with its strategy “and we have to be honest, we were also very lucky.” Anyone who thinks that Germany is an island of the blessed is naive. Due to the Corona crisis, the CSU had completely moved its large party conference to the Internet after a small party congress in May.

Söder does not want a change of strategy

Despite the growing numbers and the vaccine still missing, there is no need for a fundamental change in strategy to deal with the pandemic to achieve infection and thus herd immunity, Söder said. “For me, as a Christian, it is not ethically justifiable to sacrifice life less for the leisure activities of many,” Söder told the approximately 800 delegates who were hooked up to their computer screens.

However, it is still important to continuously adapt the strategy. “We must not give up or loosen up, but we must meet this challenge with wisdom, confidence, but also determination. It doesn’t take much to deal with Corona successfully,” Söder said. This includes, in particular, wearing masks and behaving sensibly, which also takes into account the well-being of others. Global research on a vaccine also gives hope. Söder considers a new national crown traffic light superfluous, which is currently being widely discussed. Orientation to the number of new infections (incidence value) is sufficient, as before.

Fight against conspiracy theorists and right-wing extremists

No one should give in to conspiracy theorists and right-wing extremists who tried to hijack uncertainty and hijack democracy, Söder emphasized. Söder read self-hate messagesto show how dangerous development is. For the Free State it will ban the Reich war flag, which is often displayed at Corona demonstrations.

For him personally, the Bavarian state government and the CSU, the preservation of jobs and full operation in schools and kindergartens have the highest priority. In any case, a second lockdown should be avoided, Söder said. “We need a set of rules for everyone, which must be binding, understandable and proportionate.” At the same time, however, it is also clear that the state cannot cope with the crisis without the voluntary participation of the people of the country: “You cannot control this with fines alone. A coalition of volunteers, a coalition of sensitive people. An alliance, the prudent to ensure protection among the multitudes of our people. “

In addition, the federal government must do its part to cushion the consequences of the pandemic: “Do not increase taxes, as Olaf Scholz says, that would be a wrong sign, but they would lower taxes,” Söder said. Politicians must encourage investment and all the ideas that move the country forward. Therefore, solos should be abolished for all, tax policy should be more familiar, for example through home office deductibility. There should also be lower corporate and energy taxes for businesses. For municipalities, you will continue to need help for a long time in the absence of business taxes and an additional contribution to sales tax.

Criticism of companies and combustion engines at the end of 2035

But Söder also criticized the style with which some companies such as Conti or MAN treated their employees during the crisis. In the future, Bavaria will increasingly require due diligence for employees wherever state aid is used. At the same time, research must be accelerated so that Bavaria becomes a start-up country.

To increase economic power, new impulses are needed, such as a bonus for the most modern combustion vehicles, which also helps the climate, as new and better cars are on the road. Söder emphasized that this only applies to a transition period, which the CSU also does not want to extend. Following the Californian model, it calls for the ban on internal combustion engines from 2035, something that was previously unimaginable for the CSU.
