In Hamburg, the new crown rules will apply from December 1, generally as decided by the federal and state governments on Wednesday. But there are exceptions, for example, at Christmas.

The Hanseatic city differs in details, as first mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD) announced after meeting with senators on Friday. As before Schleswig-Holstein and Lower Saxony, Hamburg also wants to allow hotel stays during Christmas to allow for family reunions. These regulations will apply from December 23 to January 1.

Mayor Peter Tschentscher presented Hamburg’s plans for Christmas.

During this time, ten people from four households should be able to meet in Hamburg. This exception was made because there is a high proportion of individual households in Hamburg, Tschentscher said. Details of the special rules for Christmas and New Year’s Eve are yet to be agreed.

As of December 1, the following applies: the maximum number of people allowed will be reduced from the current ten to five of two households. Children up to 14 years old are excluded.

Fireworks are prohibited in popular places.

Interior Senator Andy Grote (SPD) made it clear that there would be fireworks bans on New Year’s Eve in places like Jungfernstieg, Landungsbrücken or on the Reeperbahn and other popular spots. In addition, the police should have the opportunity to resolve meetings if those involved do not adhere to the rules of distance.

Mask requirement is expanded

The mask requirement will be expanded and will also apply from December 1, for example, in the corridors of offices and in queues. The retail sector must further limit the number of customers. The number of clients present is limited to one person for every ten square meters of space. Greater distances must be provided for stores larger than 800 square meters.

Christmas markets canceled

Hamburg Christmas markets cannot take place this year due to the corona pandemic. “The Christmas markets in the classical sense have been canceled,” Tschentscher said.
