Corona: Hamburg imposes night curfew

In view of the high number of new corona infections in Hamburg, the Senate has decided on a night-out restriction. Starting on Good Friday, burgers must stay home between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. if they don’t have a good reason to leave their apartment, Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD) said Wednesday. However, delivery services can still deliver food afterward.

All unnecessary travel should be avoided, Tschentscher said. Consequently, the stores would also have to close from 9:00 p.m. People on the street afterward should be prepared to be approached by police, Interior Senator Andy Grote said. There will be a greater police presence during Easter. The new containment ordinance will initially apply until April 18.

City daycares will return to extended emergency operation after Easter, Tschentscher said. In schools, some face-to-face teaching will remain, but students and teachers must take tests.

In companies, the mask requirement should be more stringent. As soon as more than one person works in a room, medical masks should be worn. Tschentscher called on companies to run quick tests on employees. If voluntary commitments are not enough and the federal government does not make a corresponding regulation, Hamburg will take its own measures, he said.

The Prime Minister’s Conference had allowed curfews

On March 22, Prime Minister and Chancellor Angela Merkel decided that exit restrictions could be issued in areas with a seven-day incidence of more than 100 new infections per 100,000 residents. The Hamburg Senate initially did not make use of this option, not even in the ordinance that went into effect on Monday.

Regional exit restrictions have already been introduced more frequently in Germany. Brandenburg only decided to do this on Tuesday for districts with an incidence of more than 100. In Mainz, the state capital of Rhineland-Palatinate, there is also a night-out restriction from Maundy Thursday. In early February, the Mannheim Administrative Court lifted a nationwide curfew in Baden-Württemberg.

The seven-day incidence in Hamburg rose from 153.7 to 163.7 on Wednesday. The number of confirmed corona infections increased by 590 cases, as announced by the health authority. That was the biggest one-day increase since January 5.
