Corona: French restaurateurs protest against curfews

There is great anger among French innkeepers over the nightly curfews announced by President Emmanuel Macron. “We are at the end of our chain, we can no longer do it,” said Didier Chenet, president of the hotel and restaurant association GNI, broadcaster Franceinfo. The move is being taken to deter a number of people, Chent said. The restorers paid the price.

“How do we treat our employees who have to be home at 9pm? How do we treat our customers? When do we fire them?” Chenet asked. “We are not beggars, we want to work, but since we cannot work, the guilty must take responsibility.” The government is to blame. According to Chenet, it is not enough for the state to financially compensate 100 percent for part-time work.

Macron had announced night curfews on Wednesday night due to the increase in the crown number. They apply from Saturday night from 9 pm to 6 am in the Paris metropolitan area and eight other cities. Macron promised to continue providing financial support to industries that suffer from it. France has been hit hard by the corona pandemic: around 33,000 people have died so far.

Already in the spring, restaurants had to close for weeks due to a strict curfew; bars are currently closed in many regions with high crown numbers. In restaurants there are stricter hygiene measures and restrictions on the number of people at a table.
