While the autumn corona wave has led to new infection records in many cases, Finland largely escaped violent outbreaks. One of the main experts of the World Health Organization, the British David Nabarro, considers that the country is “a model to follow” among European countries.
“We found a lot of things in the Finns that I think are crucial in the fight against the virus: good political leadership, a strong public health system and people who play by the rules,” Nabarro recently told SPIEGEL.
According to the latest data from the European disease protection agency ECDC, the 14-day infection rate in Europe is only lower in Iceland than in Finland. Finnish health authorities are currently registering an increase in new Covid 19 diseases. But the particularly affected region around the capital Helsinki reacted quickly with specific countermeasures.
There has never been a blockade as hard as the one Italy or Spain went through in Finland. That is why the country has come out of the crisis well economically. In the second quarter, economic output fell only 4.4 percent compared to the first: this is the best value in the EU. In the “Covid Resilience Ranking” published by the Bloomberg agency on Tuesday, Finland also ranks first in Europe.
