In Berlin, very different people are protesting Corona’s measures. rbb reporter Tina handel is in place. She says: There are family outings marching alongside hard-line right-wing extremists.
tagesschau.de: Ms. Handel, you are standing at the Friedrichstrasse train station, where the protesters are already marching. Can you estimate how many people have already gathered here?
Tina handel: This is very difficult. There are no official figures yet, but I estimate there are thousands. It takes place in different places in Berlin, some people are just coming so it’s really difficult to put an exact number of people at the moment.
But the march is now moving north from the Brandenburg Gate via Friedrichstrasse. At the end, it takes a turn and ends at Straße des 17. Juni.
Right-wing extremists among participants too

Commerce: The mix is very different. There are people who consider this to be a family outing, holding hands and who are not politically flashy. People with backpacks, probably from outside Germany, from all over Germany.
Then there are people who are really tough. Yesterday, for example, they saw Martin Sellner, the spokesman for Austria’s far-right Identity Movement. So clearly there are right-wing extremists in place. Otherwise, there is the whole spectrum in between.
For example, I found a man holding a sign with the words “Nazis out – brain in” absurd. But he runs on the same train as the right-wing extremists.
No masks, no space
tagesschau.de: How is the mood among the protesters? How you behave
Commerce: The situation at the Brandenburg Gate was quite tense. Here were people harassing the police and shouting “resistance”. Others run, as I said, hand in hand and in peace.
tagesschau.de: After the initial ban, the demonstration was allowed under strict conditions. Do the assemblies keep it?
Commerce: There are announcements from the organizers that the minimum distance must be respected. But nobody seems to care. People look at the organizer’s car, laugh briefly, and keep walking. Here in Friedrichsstrasse it is very narrow and the distance is not kept. With a mask on, I almost feel like a provocateur here. Almost no one wears mouth and nose protection.
It was noticed on arrival. On the S-Bahn, participants can be recognized mainly by the fact that they are not wearing masks. The mask requirement clearly applies here.
