It would become a “historic” debate, the decisive turning point in the fight against the coronavirus. But in the end, the chancellor did not hide that what she was able to agree with the heads of government of the countries was not enough for her. Angela Merkel said she was not satisfied with the afternoon session. One does not avoid “calamity” with these results.
After hours of discussion, the group agreed to stricter rules to contain the virus, which once again spread. The core is a step-by-step plan that foresees various requirements depending on the regional number of infections: from a mask requirement in public to a restaurant curfew and private contact restrictions. But while some expected much more, the measures are too strict for others. In any case, there are already strong criticisms of the latest agreement, from completely different sides. Meanwhile, the number of infections is increasing rapidly: The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported 6,638 new infections in one day on Thursday, the highest value since the start of the pandemic. The day before it was around 1500 less.
Chancellery Minister Helge Braun made a statement Thursday morning in the ARD “Morgenmagazin” similar to Merkel the night before. The resolutions probably weren’t enough, Braun said. “And that’s why now it depends on the population.” Basically, “everyone should do more and be more careful than what the prime ministers decided yesterday.” In reality, all contacts should be cut in half to contain the pandemic, Braun adds.
Merkel had already indirectly denounced the night before that the group could not agree on uniform travel restrictions for people from risk areas in the interior of Germany. In light of the extremely controversial housing bans that have so far only been in effect in a few federal states, Braun said: “Now is not the time to travel, but it is time to significantly reduce contacts.”
From the point of view of the German Foundation for Patient Protection, the strictest measures at critical points in the crown do not go far enough. The foundation’s board member, Eugen Brysch, told the dpa news agency: “The stricter rules for hot spots in the crown can only be a first step here. Because the way the few officials of the Regulatory authorities must monitor it remains open. “
They also lacked “binding objectives to stabilize the health authorities or to create municipal medical-nurse support groups.” The dispute over the accommodation bans here overlaps the solutions to the problems. “It is dangerous for the high-risk group.”
The German Tourism Association was again disappointed that the accommodation ban continues to exist. “It is a major setback for Germany as a travel destination that accommodation bans in many federal states continue to apply initially,” said managing director Norbert Kunz. Most federal states decided last Wednesday that citizens of places with a very high number of corona infections can only be housed when traveling within Germany if they can present a negative corona test that is no more than 48 hours old. This should apply to travelers from areas with more than 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days. There was massive criticism of this. The federal and state governments postponed a decision on Wednesday until November 8.
One of the opponents of the crown’s strict rules, on the other hand, wants to waive the accommodation ban, despite Merkel and Braun’s words of caution. “The accommodation ban affects many people who have nothing to do with the disease,” said Saxon Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) of MDR Saxony. The restriction of participants in private celebrations decided in the Chancellery should also be less strict in the Free State.
