Germany is losing massive reputation in Italy
The | Reading time: 3 minutes.
The Corona crisis is weighing on relations between Germany and Italy. According to a survey, only around a quarter of all Italians have great confidence in Germany. An expert sees the reason for the behavior of northern European countries in the crisis.
DAccording to a survey on the Corona crisis, Germany has dramatically lost its reputation in Italy. Only 26 percent of respondents still have great confidence in Germany, according to the representative survey carried out by the Demos & Pi institute for the newspaper “La Repubblica”. In January 2019, the value was still 42 percent.
“Italians feel less and less European,” says the report. There is a growing disappointment with the euro zone. “Covid has further exacerbated disappointment with the euro.”
Loss of confidence is a reaction to the behavior of northern European countries during the virus crisis, said Ilvo Diamanti of the survey institute. The most affected countries in southern Europe, such as Italy or Spain, felt abandoned by the EU and countries like Germany or the Netherlands in the crisis. “At the end of the classification, just over two out of ten Italians confidently see France,” the newspaper writes.
Confidence in Russia and China is increasing
According to the survey, 31 percent of Italians (a lot or a lot) have confidence in the United States, a decrease of seven percentage points, and 28 percent in Russia, a slight increase. A year ago, the gap between the two countries was still eleven percentage points (today three).
Confidence in China has also increased slightly. The two countries quickly sent relief supplies to Italy during the crisis. Germany had brought several Covid patients from Italy to the Federal Republic, but the public speech initially focused on the EU dispute over financial aid for Italy.
Crown management: Italians moderately satisfied with their rule
However, the confidence of Italians in their own government is also not particularly high. According to a European-wide survey carried out by the Odoxa Institute for the French newspaper “Le Figaro”, only half the Italian population believes that the government “is up to the task” in the Corona crisis. In Germany it is around 60 percent.
In the UK alone, 63 percent believe the government is up to the task. In France it is only 34 percent. Only Spaniards with 32 percent are even more critical of the government.
In Germany, 72 percent of people believe that their government “has set the standard for the severity of the situation,” while only 48 percent of French people and an average of 62 percent of all respondents say so. .
Odoxa surveyed 3005 Europeans representing the population of each country on May 5 and 6 in France and from April 30 to May 4 in the other countries.
