The great vaccination campaign in Germany has just started. And there are already the first breakdowns: in seven Bavarian districts, planned vaccinations are initially flat.
The Augsburg district and much of Upper Franconia are affected.
► The background is problems in cold chains during childbirth. “The integrated cooling log shows that the temperature recorded during transport was initially three degrees Celsius and then minus one degree Celsius,” said Augsburg District Administrator Martin Sailer (CSU).
“So far, we have not been able to confirm from a medical point of view that vaccination doses can be used without hesitation,” added Sailer. That is why it was decided not to use the vaccination doses provided for the time being.
For precautionary reasons, the six districts of Upper Franconia of Coburg, Lichtenfels, Kronach, Hof, Wunsiedel and Kulmbach are not vaccinated at the moment.
“Today there are no vaccines,” said a spokeswoman for the Coburg district of the German news agency. Doctors only inject themselves at the Upper Franconian vaccination centers in Bayreuth, Bamberg and Forchheim.
The district administrators of the affected districts want to check first, including with the manufacturer Biontech, if the vaccine can still be used without problems. “If there is even the slightest indication that the vaccine does not meet the 100 percent quality criteria, this lot will not be vaccinated,” said Lichtenfels district administrator Christian Meißner.
It’s not about the rhythm.
► According to the manufacturer Biontech, the vaccine should be stored for a longer period at minus 70 degrees. In specially developed shipping boxes with dry ice, the preparation can withstand these temperatures for up to 15 days. At vaccination centers, the vaccine can be stored unopened in delivery boxes or in conventional refrigerators for up to five days between two and eight degrees, according to the company.
The preparation can even be stored up to 30 degrees up to two hours before injection. The actual vaccination can take place at room temperature, Biontech said.
