Corona – Bavaria’s stricter mask requirements and contact restrictions

On Wednesday, Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) and the prime minister agreed on new crown rules. Markus Söder (CSU), head of state of Bavaria, the resolutions are not far-reaching enough. The Bavarian cabinet has now decided on rules that partly go beyond the joint decision of the federal and state governments.

In Bavarian regions with high crown numbers, strict restrictions on private contacts will be applied in the future, and the mask requirement will be significantly expanded in affected cities and districts. In view of the sharp increase in corona cases also in Bavaria, Söder sees a daily increasing risk of a new lockdown.

“Unfortunately the situation is serious and it gets worse every day,” he said after the cabinet meeting. Corona is becoming more and more dramatic across Europe. Even if there is no reason to panic, the situation is still more complex than last spring. Because now winter is just around the corner and, at the same time, “the numbers are skyrocketing across Europe.”

In Bavarian regions with a high number of infections, therefore, strict curfew times will be applied in the restaurant sector. If there are more than 35 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in seven days, restaurants have to close at 11 pm and alcohol can no longer be sold at gas stations, and alcohol is prohibited in public places. With a seven-day incidence of more than 50, the curfew and the other two bans apply from 10 p.m.

Mask requirement and Tighter contact restrictions

The requirement for masks in Bavaria is also expanding significantly regionally, also with more than 35 new corona infections per 100,000 inhabitants in seven days. According to the cabinet decision, masks should be worn everywhere in these regions where people gather closer or longer, for example, in pedestrian areas, in markets, in all public buildings, but also in gathering areas and traffic such as in elevators and in the entrance areas of high-rise buildings.

And contact restrictions are tightened: if there are more than 35 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in seven days in a region, only two households or a maximum of ten people are allowed to meet. With a seven-day incidence of more than 50, only two households or a maximum of five people are allowed to meet. Health authorities must order this. “This is imperative for municipalities to implement it,” Söder said.

The Prime Minister also said that Bavaria had agreed to accept intensive care patients at the request of the Czech Republic. Nationally, the occupancy rate for intensive care beds already exceeds 40 percent.
